Medical care

At Bark EUROPA, the safety of all passengers on board is our utmost priority. We expect our trainees to take responsibility for their own health and well-being. If you are in insufficient physical or mental health, it can create undue risks for yourself and others on board.

Medical facilities

It is important to understand that during a long ocean voyage, medical care is limited and transport to the mainland is often impossible. While we do have crew members with medical training and a small emergency hospital with some medicines and wound dressings, extensive medical care is not available on board.

If you have concerns about your fitness for a sea voyage on a sailing and rolling ship, we strongly recommend seeking advice from your doctor before booking. Our ship's doctor may also contact you or your doctor for further advice on your participation.

Please note that all bookings are subject to the approval of the shipping company and captain based on the completed health statement.

Unfortunately, we regret to inform you that it is not possible for diabetics to join our ship for an ocean voyage or on a voyage to a remote area such as Antarctica. Participation on one of the shorter voyages will be subject to the advice of our medical team.

Seasickness

If you are concerned about experiencing seasickness on board, we recommend taking preventative measures. While sailing ships are generally steadier than motor vessels in strong winds, it is still possible to experience motion sickness. To minimize your risk of seasickness, we suggest coming on board feeling relaxed, eating a nutritious diet, and getting sufficient sleep.

In addition to these preventative measures, taking medication to prevent seasickness can be helpful. However, we advise against using anti-seasickness patches that are placed behind the ears, as they can have unwanted side effects. Please be advised that climbing the rigging is not possible when taking seasickness medication.

Medication

When bringing medication on board, please ensure that you have enough supply to last for the duration of the voyage. If you are prone to certain conditions such as cold sores or cystitis, it is important to bring your own medication to manage the symptoms. Additionally, we kindly ask that you inform the office of the Bark EUROPA about any such conditions to ensure that we can take appropriate precautions on board. As we live in close quarters on the ship, it is important to prevent the spread of illnesses such as colds or influenza to other passengers. If you have any questions or concerns about a specific health problem, we advise you to contact the office of the shipping company. They can provide you with the necessary information or put you in touch with one of the ship's doctors.

Please inform the office of the Bark EUROPA about any (change in) condition and keep in mind to bring your own necessary medication with you.
