Far away from home

Far away from home

“I have never been so far from home” Benthe said when she realized we were already sailing off the coast of Africa. “Oh my…”, is Gjalts reply, “I hope this turns out well…”

As I stumble up the stairs to the deckhouse her words echo through my head. Then an old Friesian childrens song pops up: ‘Suze nane poppe, …., heit en mem binne fier fan hûs, dy kinne wy net beroppe’ (dear baby, …, mom and dad are far from home, we can’t call them now). Very rightly said, it is not possible to call them now. Immediately after that in my head two lines pop up from a song by Crosby, Stills & Nash: “If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with’.

The love for the ones who are dear to us defies distance. Everywhere on earth we look at the same sky, the same moon and the same sun. The arms of a heart full of love are longer that the world. We may be further away, but we are still as close as always. It will turn out well!
