Meet the Crew Monday: Engineer Seba👷🇨🇱

Seba sailed his first voyage in 2020 and it was one of the most memorable voyages the EUROPA made immediately. When all the borders started to close during the pandemic, Seba sailed non-stop for 3 months from Ushuaia to Scheveningen.

What inspired you to join the crew of Bark EUROPA, how did you join the crew?

I first heard of Europa from a friend and roommate, Benja, who has sailed to Antarctica as a guide. Later on, I started meeting some of the crew who came to Punta Arenas when they signed off and stayed at my place. Eventually, Rensje came along, and she hooked me up with the ship.

What is it like to live and work on a tall ship like Bark EUROPA?

Well, Europa is the only tall ship I have ever worked or lived on. That being said, I must say it's pretty cool! You work hard, but you can always count on having a nice meal and a place to sleep. People are nice and always ready to help if needed.

What do you do when you are not on the ship?

When I am not on the ship, I normally fly back home. I live on a little farm with friends, so I help where I can with taking care of the animals and grows. Also Im part of a working team from the Museo de Historia Natural Rio Seco, where I help with building structures for the mountings. This is also where I have my blacksmith workshop, where I forge knives and other stuff.

Could you tell us about a unique destination you've visited on board EUROPA and what made it special?

I really like Madeira. Super green and nice weather.

Can you share a funny or unexpected moment that happened during one of your voyages?

I recall a huge iceberg floating, that had a kind of lake on top, which was flowing down on one side creating a waterfall. When empty, it would tip to one side and then to the other, filling up again and bursting out of the water. It was really beautiful.

What are some of the challenges you face as a crew member and how do you overcome them?

I must say that teamwork is one of the most relevant features of Europa life. I as an engineer sometimes confront tasks that on my own would be impossible to manage. Luckily I can always count on the deckies and other crew members to help out when needed

Can you share a sneak peek of the Dungeon Tour?

The dungeon tours are really requested by guests along the way, but I must say that what they are mostly interested in, is the dry stores. I think it's a super nice refit for the ship which was done in 2020.

How has being a part of Bark EUROPA's crew influenced your perspective on the ocean and the environment?

Being on Bark EUROPA has shown me the world. Different cultures and places, the ocean and its wonders, but I must say that everywhere we go, we might find garbage floating away.It's amazing how much debris can be found all around. Makes you wonder if it’s not too late for us as species.
