We left Ushuaia early the morning of the 15th, moving steadily through the Beagle Channel, spotting the first penguins, whales and albatrosses. For the last few miles we took plenty of time, enjoying the shelter of Isla Nueva until after dinner, as we have learned that being able to eat that last meal before going out to completely open water can make a big difference. Right after dinner we said yes to the Drake. During the first 30 hours we motorsailed many miles, but these miles are spread to the East and West more than the South – turning the ship in the Southerly and later South South Westerly winds as good as possible. Though the track looks like we are reconsidering our decision to go to Antarctica – and that might have been true for those of us struggling with the unavoidable seasickness of the first days at open ocean – we knew it would not be much longer than a day before the wind would veer. And she did; the engine was switched of 30 hours after we entered the Drake, after having moving with an avergae speed of about 3 knots in a direction that was not exactly satisfying. At the moment we are sailing with good speed straight towards the South, enjoying the smoother side of the Drake, with rare North Westerly winds.
